Kiehl’s Since 1851

I began working on the iconic Kiehl’s brand nearly 20 years ago and it’s been an ongoing love affair that continuously feeds my passion for my work as a writer. For the first 8 years, I worked “in-house” as Kiehl’s first-ever copywriter. Today, I count Kiehl’s among my most cherished clients. Over the two decades working on the brand, I’ve helped to develop 100+ Kiehl’s products – from crafting product concepts to naming and writing packaging copy. Post-launch, I’ve collaborated with numerous Kiehl’s marketing professionals to amplify what are today new cult favorites.

“The role of the ‘voice’ of a brand cannot be understated. This most valuable asset to any company--indeed the communication of its personality--is key to achieving the emotional connection that so many businesses seek with their customers (not to mention their employees). I have had the distinction of working directly with Carmine Montalto when he held this position at Kiehl's, which was during our most important developmental years--wherein we went from a company with one free-standing store, to the global reach and nearly 100 Kiehl's stores that we have today. Carmine completely embodied the role of "voice" of our company in every written missive he created, and by dint of the quality and passion of his work, he quickly became the author of virtually all of our communication, from our product labels to our in-store signage to our Web site.”

Kiehl’s Confidential

I collaborated with the marketing and creative teams to create a compelling four-page mailer with a whimsical vibe that’s characteristically Kiehl’s and something very few beauty brands could do.

Kiehl’s Dermatologist Solutions

I partnered with product development and creative teams to craft the sub-brand concept for the elevated sub-brand rooted in Kiehl’s pharmacy origins. I named the new brand, strategized on the phase-one product launch, crafted product names and packaging copy. I wrote master the concept that set the tone for the brand at the outset. Informed by scientific dossiers, I developed an authoritative, intelligent brand voice distinct from the Kiehl’s brand, with the no-nonsense character of a dermatologist. Product names are detailed and intentionally lengthy – “non-cosmetic.” To lend credibility, I wrote informative, highly detailed marketing materials reminiscent of those provided by a dermatology office.
